Lucy and I threw a retirement/60th birthday party for our mom. I'm sure she's glad I'm telling the world she's turning 60. And actually she isn't turning 60 until October and she retired in March. But we decided to have the party while Lucy is here.
The party was 50's theme. Our mom was born in the 50's and loves that era. Our friend Marsha came up from Denver to help us. She has thrown a 50's party before and has a bunch of decorations. Yay!
I did some research on 50's food. And the Hardworking Husband was happy to learn bacon wrapped food was a big trend. They also had what they called dunks. We know them as dips. Of course, burgers and shakes were big. Other food of the 50's were patte, melon ball cocktails, deviled eggs, cheese balls, and Mix Trix (Chex Mix). There are so many others, but I don't want to go on and on.
For the party, we had sliders, melon ball "cocktails", cheese balls, Mix Trix, spinach dunk, onion dunk, bacon wrapped lil smokies, bacon wrapped tater tots, bacon wrapped dates, cupcakes, floats and punch. I may have gotten a little carried away. But there were so many good foods from the 50's and I had help. A friend made the Mix Trix, Jamie made bacon wrapped dates, and another friend made amazing cupcakes (We did pay for these).
Marsha brought props to make a photo booth. That was a ton of fun. We used my iPad as the camera and we set it up to print to photo paper using the HP ePrint app. Marsha took the pictures, put them in a scrapbook and the guest wrote notes to our mom.
I think my favorite part of the party was the "memories". When sending out the invitations, we included a letter asking everyone to mail a memory of our mother to me. I got this idea from Pinterest. The Nothing But Bonfires blog did this for their father. I was hoping we would get at least 60 (because she's turning 60). We got over 60 and I was thrilled. I took those memories and put them in envelopes. We gave them to her during the party. I suspected that there would be a lot of tears. So I picked up a box of tissue for the party. And I was right about the tears. Our mom read a few, cried, and decided to read them over time alone so she could cry.
We had so much fun. It was great to see everyone. I wish we could have spent more time with everyone. Thank you everyone who came and everyone who sent memories. You all are such a blessing to us.
